When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, Lazar Chapchakhov served in 38 IAP, flying I-153s on the North-Western Front.

On 13 August, the I-153s from38 IAP fought with Ju 88s over Bol’shaya Gorushka and leytenant Ivan Balyuk and Chapchakhov claimed one each. Chapchakhov also claimed a Bf 110 over the same place. It’s possible that Aleksandr Yelkhov also took part in this combat since it’s known that he claimed a Ju 88 together with another pilot during the day.

On 14 August, three I-153s from 38 IAP claimed one Ju 88 Over Kobylkino and one Bf 110 over Ramushevo. It seems that two of the pilots involved in these claims were Mikhail Gorbanev and Chapchakhov.

On 11 February 1942, Chapchakhov claimed two shared Ju 88s between Dorokhovo – Lyubytovo. These were claimed together with four other pilots and it’s possible that one of these pilots was starshiy leytenant Nikolay Naumov since it’s known that he claimed two shared Ju 88s during the day.

On 16 February 1942, he claimed three shared Ju 87s.

He claimed a ”Me 115” on 1 April.

He was killed in action on 13 April 1942.

At the time of his death, Chapchakhov had claimed 4 biplane victories and a total of 6. These victories were claimed during 268 sorties and 59 combats.
